Thomas Dutton author of The Hand Tools Manual is a Senior Instructor of
Biomedical Equipment Technology and Soldering, Shop Skills Chair and Network
Administrator for TSTC Waco. Before earning his 2-year degree at TSTC in
Biomedical Technology, Dutton received his BA degree from Arizona State
University in Industrial Arts. He currently resides in Temple, TX with his
wife Debbie. After his wife was offered a job at Scott and White in Temple,
he decided to take a class that was offered at TSTC Waco and in the process
was asked to teach a course there.
What made you want to write The Hand Tools Manual?
Right now there are few books about hand tools that are too vague and not
specific enough. These books only talk about 2 or 3 tools but in reality
that are many many more. I first started taking what I could find that I
liked and put those pieces together for my classes for my students. I also
wanted to add the proper use of the tool, safety, common sense and following
the rules.
What is your philosophy in the classroom?
I want to instill in the students that using the correct tool is important.
If you use the wrong tool and something breaks then all you're doing is
wasting your time having to redo it and in the end it costs you money.
There is also a great history behind the tools and I think that is important
for the student to know so that they can retain the information and store in
their memory better so that can be used on the job later.
